What Makes a Good Small Business Website?

Five things that actually matter, and what most designers oversell.

A lot gets written about web design. Most of it is designers talking to other designers. Here's what actually matters for a small business that needs its site to do real work.

1. It loads fast on a phone

Over 60% of web traffic is mobile. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, a significant portion of visitors leave before seeing anything. Fast load times also affect where you rank on Google.

Template builders like Wix and Squarespace load slowly because they serve code for every feature on the platform, most of which your site isn't using. Custom-built sites include only what's needed.

2. It answers the question in the first five seconds

The question every visitor has is: what do you do, who is it for, and how do I start? If they have to scroll or click around to figure this out, you've already lost most of them. Your hero section needs to answer this directly.

3. It has a clear next step

Every page should tell visitors what to do next. Book a call. Get a quote. Add to cart. View the menu. One action per page, made obvious. Sites that try to direct visitors in five directions at once get ignored.

4. It matches how your business actually operates

A food truck doesn't need a reservation system. A law firm doesn't need a merch store. Build for your actual business model, not for what websites are generally supposed to have.

5. Google can find it

Proper title tags, a clean URL structure, fast load times, and content that uses the words your customers actually type into Google. SEO doesn't require tricks. It requires that your site clearly state what it does, where it operates, and who it's for.

What gets oversold

  • Animations and scroll effects. They slow your site down and rarely improve conversion rates.
  • Complex navigation menus. Most small business sites need 4–5 nav links, period.
  • Stock photography. Real photos of your actual business outperform stock images every time.
  • Testimonials in the hero. Visitors don't trust them there. Move them lower.
